Should I take the flu vaccine?

By taking the vaccine, you can avoid major periods of illness. Influenza causes illness that makes one normally bedridden for 3-10 days, and every year 10-30% of the population becomes ill.

Avoiding illness for both personal and professional life is something that most people benefit from. By vaccinating you also protect your relatives, if they are at risk. In addition, you help reduce the burden in the health care system.

You can read more at FHI's pages about who is in the risk group and thus recommended to take the flu vaccine every year.

Should I vaccinate my children?

Health authorities in Norway do not recommend influenza vaccination of healthy children without known risk factors. Children's flu vaccination, on the other hand, is recommended for children who:

  • Are premature births, especially children born before week 32 of pregnancy, from 6 months to 5 years
  • Have chronic lung disease (including asthma)
  • Have cardiovascular disease
  • Have type 1 and 2 diabetes
  • Have liver or kidney failure
  • Have chronic neurological disease or injury, especially people with reduced lung capacity and/or coughing force
  • Have impaired immune system as a result of illness or treatment of disease (for example, organ transplants, cancer, HIV, rheumatoid arthritis and other diseases)
  • Have very severe obesity
  • Other serious and/or chronic illness in which influenza poses a serious health risk after individual assessment by a physician (for example, people with congenital chromosomal abnormalities, genetic syndromes, and complex chromosomal abnormalities not elsewhere classified)

I'm pregnant. Can I take the flu vaccine?

There is no research to suggest that flu vaccine harms the fetus, and the flu vaccine is considered safe to take throughout pregnancy.

Can you get the flu from the vaccine?

You can't get the flu from the vaccine, and you don't get long-term sick. You can get side effects that last for a couple of days. If you hear of someone getting worse than this, they have something else underlying that has nothing to do with the vaccine. Research doesn't give us the coating to say otherwise. If you have more doubts about this, please refer to the Norwegian Institute of Public Health's website.

Does the vaccine protect against the corona?

No, the vaccine protects against viruses that cause the flu. It is not possible to distinguish influenza and corona based on clinical symptoms alone. However, you are protected from double contagion, as it is possible to get both the corona and the flu at the same time.

Why do you need personal information in your consent form?

The personal data is used to register the vaccine in SYSLAB, the national database for vaccines. This is important so that both you and your healthcare provider can see which vaccines you have taken. The personal data is stored encrypted in our database and is only visible to the healthcare professional on assignment.

Do I have to wait at the vaccination site for 20 minutes after the vaccine is taken?

One in a million may have an allergic reaction. We have with medical equipment to safely be able to deal with such incidents. A very few may have a drop in blood pressure for various reasons and therefore pass out. It would be nice if we were around to help.

At a minimum, in any case, you must:

  • Stay among people, do not sit alone
  • Stay in the building, don't move out
