What can our doctors treat during a home visit?

Hjemmelegene can help you with the same issues as your GP or the emergency clinic. Our doctors are very experienced and carry well-equipped medical kits to provide thorough diagnostics and treatment. In most cases, they can assist with the same concerns you would normally see a doctor for, from fever and infections to pain and discomfort in the body and limbs. We can, for example, measure CRP (infection markers), test urine, detect strep, measure blood pressure, listen to the heart and lungs, take nasal swabs for respiratory infections, stitch wounds, examine eye injuries, apply bandages, and much more. The doctors can also refer you for hospital admission, to a specialist, or for diagnostic imaging, as well as issue sick notes, prescriptions, and medical certificates during a home visit. We emphasize that in case of an acute threat to life or health, you must always call 113. If you have questions about what our doctors can assist with in a digital consultation, you can read more here.

What can we not treat on home visits?

Although we can handle most conditions at home, there are some patients who should never wait for us. If you suspect an acute life-threatening condition, you must always call 113 first. Examples include chest pain, loss of consciousness, cardiac arrest, stroke (sudden facial droop, paralysis, slurred or unclear speech), infants under 3 months with fever above 38.5°C, acute allergic reaction, bloody vomiting, children with an asthma attack (with known asthma), foreign object in the airway, seizures, febrile convulsions, serious injuries, and accidents.

Which tests can we perform during a home visit?

Our doctors can perform the following tests during a standard home visit: CRP (simple finger-prick blood test), strep test (throat infection), blood sugar, and urine test. In addition, we conduct several other important parts of a clinical examination, such as measuring blood oxygen levels, listening to the heart and lungs, and checking pulse and blood pressure. We can also carry out other tests that are sent to a laboratory for analysis, such as urine culture, nasal swab (corona/mycoplasma), and stool samples. If there is a need for specific/extended blood tests that must be analyzed in a laboratory, the doctor can issue a referral so you can have the test taken at one of Fürst’s sampling stations.

Can you stitch and tape wounds and cuts?

Yes, but it depends somewhat on the wound. Our doctors are experienced and have the equipment to stitch and tape smaller wounds, but if there is pulsating bleeding or larger deep wounds, you should immediately contact the emergency clinic or call 113.

Do Hjemmelegene doctors have the authority to prescribe medications?

All our doctors have approved Norwegian authorization and full prescribing rights. They can issue prescriptions for medications deemed necessary for treatment. They can also issue sick notes, write medical certificates, and refer patients to hospitals if needed. Please note that it is up to each doctor to assess the medical necessity of a prescription. Our doctors can prescribe all types of medications but are generally restrictive with prescriptions for addictive drugs (so-called A- and B-class medications). If your only request is a prescription for such drugs, you should instead see your regular GP.

Can I get a sick note during a home visit?

Yes, during a home visit Hjemmelegene can issue a valid sick note. However, it cannot be issued through the doctor chat unless you have previously had a visit from us. It is up to the doctor, in consultation with you, to assess the need for a sick note. Please note that we cannot backdate sick notes under any circumstances, and the doctor will normally only issue a sick note for 3–5 days. If you need a longer sick note, you should contact your regular GP.
