What are the limitations of a digital consultation?
Unfortunately, there are certain things the doctor is not allowed to do in a digital consultation. We cannot help you with:
- Prescriptions for medications regulated under the narcotics legislation, i.e., A/B drugs (including strong painkillers or sedatives such as Paralgin Forte and Imovane)
- In most cases, prescriptions for antibiotics (with some exceptions, e.g., simple urinary tract infections, eye infections, tick bites, and sexually transmitted infections)
- Issuing sick notes
- Absence certificates for school/university on exam dates
- Writing referrals “on request.” The doctor must make an independent medical assessment as the basis for any referral to a specialist or further examinations
- Assessments, initiation of new medications, and other issues requiring long-term follow-up by the same doctor/specialist
- If you are experiencing suicidal thoughts, please contact 113, the emergency clinic, the 24-hour SOS service or Mental Helse's helpline at 116 123
In case of an acute threat to health or life, always call 113!
Do I need to install an app to book a digital consultation?
We've purposely avoided making an app, so you don't have to. Everything is done from your browser. The advantage is that you can use the services from both PC and mobile. You can still create an app button on your iPhone that will take you to this website.
- Tap the share icon at the bottom (square with arrow)
- Select “Add to Home Screen”
- Voila! Now you have the “app” with which links to this website.
I can't get video to work, what should I do?
- To start a video consultation with the Home Doctors, we need access to the camera and microphone of your device. Select “Allow” when asked about camera and microphone access when entering the video room. You can also provide access under settings on your phone or PC. Settings look a little different depending on whether you're on phone or pc and what browser you're using. Below you will find links to help pages for your browser.
- If you need help, you can also start a chat with our customer support by tapping the speech bubble in the bottom right corner.
- It may also be that your browser is not supported. Try upgrading your browser or changing device and try again.
- A good old trick is also to try to restart your phone or pc if the problem persists.

Can I bring up multiple issues?
In a digital consultation, we ask that you limit yourself to one issue. If you bring up several, the doctor may need to select one to focus on during the consultation. If you have multiple issues that are complex or time-consuming, we recommend seeing a doctor in person, for example by booking a home visit.
Can I get a medical certificate?
After individual assessment, you can get a doctor's certificate documenting absence from school/study. We do not write absence statements on exam dates.
Can I get a referral to a specialist?
Referrals to specialists must be based on a medical indication and assessed by a doctor. We can issue referrals where relevant. The doctor will decide if it is appropriate and evaluate the medical indication based on your issue and medical history. Please note that Hjemmelegene cannot guarantee that a referral will be accepted by the secondary healthcare service or by your insurance company. It is therefore important that you share all relevant information about your situation with the doctor.
Are you writing a referral for X-rays and MRI?
The home doctors can refer you to X-ray, MRI or mammography, if there is an indication for it. A physical examination will often be needed to be able to determine the indication.
We cannot refer you for urgent examinations, i.e. we cannot refer you for an X-ray in case of suspected fracture. Then you need to contact the emergency room.
MRI/mammography is referred to in exceptional cases, and only if the doctor thinks there is an indication for it.
Do you write a sick leave?
We cannot write sick leave to NAV over digital consultation, with a few exceptions. Assessment of this is up to the individual doctor.
What can I get a prescription for?
As a general rule, we can renew your fasting medicine, but the doctor will always make an individual assessment. We do not write prescriptions for strong pain relievers or sedatives (A and B preparations), e.g. Cosylan, Paralgin forte and Imovane.
As a starting point, we do not start up new medicine, as this often requires follow-up over time. The doctor will always make an individual assessment of each individual request.
Can I get a prescription for antibiotics at a digital doctor appointment?
In the vast majority of cases, we can not give a prescription for antibiotics.
There are some exceptions, such as simple urinary tract infections, eye inflammation, tick bites, and STDs.
The doctor will always make an individual assessment of your situation.
If you are unsure if we can help you digitally, please feel free to contact our customer support.
I need vaccine guidance and a prescription. Can you guys help?
We provide guidance on which vaccines are relevant to you — whether for travel or other situations. We can print prescriptions, so you can easily pick up and put the vaccine at a pharmacy of your choice.
Can I get a prescription and vaccine card for yellow fever vaccine?
No, unfortunately we cannot help with yellow fever vaccination digitally. We can help with this at a home visits, or you can contact your GP/vaccine centre.
Most pharmacies do not put yellow fever vaccine, because it is a live attenuated vaccine. In addition, the signature of a doctor is required to issue the international vaccination certificate (yellow vaccine card).
Can I get a prescription for cough syrup?
Hjemmelegene can help you with guidance, medications, and further examinations for managing cough.
That said, we cannot prescribe cough suppressants that contain sedative substances, such as Cosylan. This is because they are classified as narcotics and can be addictive.
Can you provide guidance and prescriptions for birth control?
We can help with guidance on contraceptive use, as well as renewing prescriptions. Please note that some contraceptives require regular physical control of, among other things, blood pressure.
Can you treat a urinary tract infection?
We can help you, if you have a urinary tract infection. Our doctors make an assessment of situation, and can prescribe antibiotics where appropriate. However, it is important to note that the doctor sometimes needs you to see a doctor physically, with a urine test. Then we will not be able to write out antibiotics.
Can I book an STD test with you?
Yes, we can help you with both testing and treatment of sexually transmitted infections (STIs). You will receive a test kit by mail and can take the test at home. Once the results have been reviewed by the doctor, we can prescribe the appropriate treatment if needed. We cannot start treatment without a positive test result.
My child is sick – can you help?
We can guide you on how to handle acute illness in your child. However, we have a low threshold for recommending a physical examination by a doctor, since a child’s condition can worsen quickly and it may be difficult to assess their overall health in a digital consultation.
Can you treat a cold?
We can guide you in case of respiratory ailments (cough, sore throat, stuffy nose, sinus problems, etc.), including recommending or prescribing symptom-relieving preparations. We cannot assess whether you need antibiotics, or prescribe strong cough suppressants (Cosylan or Solvipect comp).
Can you treat pain?
We can guide on the use of pain medication. And print or phonye prescriptions for weak painkillers, in which the doctor assesses that this is relevant. We do not write out prescriptions for addictive painkillers (A and B preparations), such as Paralgin forte, Nobligan and Morphine.
Can rashes and skin problems be assessed digitally?
Rashes and other skin problems can often be clearly shown in photos, making them well-suited for chat consultations.
We can help assess most skin conditions and provide a referral to a dermatologist if relevant. This is always up to the individual doctor and cannot be guaranteed. If there is suspicion of infection, we will usually recommend a physical examination.
An exception is tick bites, where we can prescribe antibiotics if you have the classic symptoms of erythema migrans.
When should I dial 113?
If you suspect an acute life-threatening illness, call 113 - and do not book an appointment with us. This can be, for example, in the case of chest pain, symptoms of stroke, changes in mental state, sudden severe pain, head injuries, convulsions or major burns.
