Can I get a prescription and vaccine card for yellow fever vaccine?
No, unfortunately we cannot help with yellow fever vaccination digitally. We can help with this at a home visits, or you can contact your GP/vaccine centre.
Most pharmacies do not put yellow fever vaccine, because it is a live attenuated vaccine. In addition, the signature of a doctor is required to issue the international vaccination certificate (yellow vaccine card).
Can I get a prescription for antibiotics at a digital doctor appointment?
In the vast majority of cases, we can not give a prescription for antibiotics.
There are some exceptions, such as simple urinary tract infections, eye inflammation, tick bites, and STDs.
The doctor will always make an individual assessment of your situation.
If you are unsure if we can help you digitally, please feel free to contact our customer support.
What can we help with digitally?
Through a digital consultation, you get direct contact with one of our skilled doctors! We can, for example:
- Treat and follow up on medical issues and conditions that do not require a physical examination, such as medication reviews and side effects, mild respiratory symptoms, skin rashes, and more.
- Provide medical advice and recommendations based on an assessment of your health condition.
- Renew prescriptions for your regular medications, except those regulated under the narcotics legislation (A/B drugs such as Imovane, Paralgin Forte, etc.).
- In some cases, the doctor can issue a referral to a specialist, but often a physical consultation is required first.
What can our doctors treat during a home visit?
Hjemmelegene can help you with the same issues as your GP or the emergency clinic. Our doctors are very experienced and carry well-equipped medical kits to provide thorough diagnostics and treatment. In most cases, they can assist with the same concerns you would normally see a doctor for, from fever and infections to pain and discomfort in the body and limbs. We can, for example, measure CRP (infection markers), test urine, detect strep, measure blood pressure, listen to the heart and lungs, take nasal swabs for respiratory infections, stitch wounds, examine eye injuries, apply bandages, and much more. The doctors can also refer you for hospital admission, to a specialist, or for diagnostic imaging, as well as issue sick notes, prescriptions, and medical certificates during a home visit. We emphasize that in case of an acute threat to life or health, you must always call 113. If you have questions about what our doctors can assist with in a digital consultation, you can read more here.
Who is behind Hjemmelegene?
Hjemmelegene is made up of a multidisciplinary core team with broad experience from both public and private healthcare, as well as business. The team includes many experienced doctors, along with engineers, technologists, designers, and economists, including co-founders of companies such as Kolonial.no and Nabobil. Our goal is to use new technology to reintroduce the home visit. By connecting patients with nearby doctors, we believe it becomes simpler and better to be both a doctor and a patient. Our doctors and healthcare staff are carefully selected from among many applicants and share our ambition to bring back the home visit. We receive fantastic feedback on our doctors and healthcare staff every single day, and we are very proud of that.

What can we not treat on home visits?

What are the limitations of a digital consultation?
Unfortunately, there are certain things the doctor is not allowed to do in a digital consultation. We cannot help you with:
- Prescriptions for medications regulated under the narcotics legislation, i.e., A/B drugs (including strong painkillers or sedatives such as Paralgin Forte and Imovane)
- In most cases, prescriptions for antibiotics (with some exceptions, e.g., simple urinary tract infections, eye infections, tick bites, and sexually transmitted infections)
- Issuing sick notes
- Absence certificates for school/university on exam dates
- Writing referrals “on request.” The doctor must make an independent medical assessment as the basis for any referral to a specialist or further examinations
- Assessments, initiation of new medications, and other issues requiring long-term follow-up by the same doctor/specialist
- If you are experiencing suicidal thoughts, please contact 113, the emergency clinic, the 24-hour SOS service or Mental Helse's helpline at 116 123
In case of an acute threat to health or life, always call 113!
Which tests can we perform during a home visit?
Our doctors can perform the following tests during a standard home visit: CRP (simple finger-prick blood test), strep test (throat infection), blood sugar, and urine test. In addition, we conduct several other important parts of a clinical examination, such as measuring blood oxygen levels, listening to the heart and lungs, and checking pulse and blood pressure. We can also carry out other tests that are sent to a laboratory for analysis, such as urine culture, nasal swab (corona/mycoplasma), and stool samples. If there is a need for specific/extended blood tests that must be analyzed in a laboratory, the doctor can issue a referral so you can have the test taken at one of Fürst’s sampling stations.
Can anyone work as a Hjemmelege?
No. Our doctors are carefully selected based on strict requirements for medical competence and experience. They work daily in GP practices, hospitals, and emergency care as general practitioners, surgeons, oncologists, or internists. These are highly skilled doctors, well accustomed to handling all kinds of medical issues, both big and small, for children, adults, and the elderly. Being a Hjemmelege is something we value highly. These are the very best doctors, chosen through a rigorous selection process among hundreds of applicants. A Hjemmelege is an exceptionally skilled doctor. We take pride in ensuring this, so you as a patient can feel completely safe in meeting us.
Digital consultation vs home visit, what should I choose?
Digital consultation lends itself to a number of simpler issues, but cannot be used for everything. If you think a physical examination or tests are needed, we recommend a home visit. The advantage of our service, is that we offer both home visits and digital consultations, leaving the choice up to you. If in doubt, you can start with a digital consultation. The doctor will be able to guide you further, and if a home visit is needed, the cost of the digital consultation will be offset. Digital consultation is also suitable as a follow-up after a home visit.

How are the doctors at Hjemmelegene quality-assured?
All Hjemmelegene doctors are highly skilled, with a minimum of three years of work experience, and are confident in handling all types of conditions within general medicine. Because we receive a large number of applications from doctors, we can select only the very best. We set very high standards for medical competence and experience, while also placing great emphasis on personal suitability, social skills, and communication abilities. All Hjemmelegene doctors are thoroughly checked for authorization in the healthcare register, screened through CVs and at least two references, and interviewed both by phone and face-to-face before starting. Each doctor is then continuously followed up through personalized feedback from every patient. This ensures that all our doctors maintain our high standard. We hope you will provide feedback after your visit so that we can continuously improve ourselves and our doctors. A Hjemmelege is a skilled doctor.
Can I bring up multiple issues?
In a digital consultation, we ask that you limit yourself to one issue. If you bring up several, the doctor may need to select one to focus on during the consultation. If you have multiple issues that are complex or time-consuming, we recommend seeing a doctor in person, for example by booking a home visit.
Can you stitch and tape wounds and cuts?
Yes, but it depends somewhat on the wound. Our doctors are experienced and have the equipment to stitch and tape smaller wounds, but if there is pulsating bleeding or larger deep wounds, you should immediately contact the emergency clinic or call 113.
Do Hjemmelegene doctors have the authority to prescribe medications?
All our doctors have approved Norwegian authorization and full prescribing rights. They can issue prescriptions for medications deemed necessary for treatment. They can also issue sick notes, write medical certificates, and refer patients to hospitals if needed. Please note that it is up to each doctor to assess the medical necessity of a prescription. Our doctors can prescribe all types of medications but are generally restrictive with prescriptions for addictive drugs (so-called A- and B-class medications). If your only request is a prescription for such drugs, you should instead see your regular GP.
Why home visits?
Home visits used to be a cornerstone of the medical profession. Within the safe setting of the home, the doctor and patient have excellent conditions for a consultation. As a patient, you can avoid waiting rooms and travel, yet still receive a full medical assessment with physical examinations and blood tests on the spot. By seeing the patient at home, the doctor gains valuable insight into the patient’s overall situation and environment. This helps the doctor better understand the condition and tailor treatment to the patient’s circumstances. We believe this creates simpler, closer, and better encounters between doctor and patient.
Can I get a referral to a specialist?
Referrals to specialists must be based on a medical indication and assessed by a doctor. We can issue referrals where relevant. The doctor will decide if it is appropriate and evaluate the medical indication based on your issue and medical history. Please note that Hjemmelegene cannot guarantee that a referral will be accepted by the secondary healthcare service or by your insurance company. It is therefore important that you share all relevant information about your situation with the doctor.
Hvordan får jeg tak i henvisningen/legeerklæringen min?
You can find your referrals/medical certificates under "My Documents" on My Page. You can also go directly to "My Documents" by logging in with BankID on on this page.
Can I get a sick note during a home visit?
Yes, during a home visit Hjemmelegene can issue a valid sick note. However, it cannot be issued through the doctor chat unless you have previously had a visit from us. It is up to the doctor, in consultation with you, to assess the need for a sick note. Please note that we cannot backdate sick notes under any circumstances, and the doctor will normally only issue a sick note for 3–5 days. If you need a longer sick note, you should contact your regular GP.
Why do we use chat, phone, images, and video?
Digital consultations allow the doctor to work more efficiently and make it possible for you to have a consultation no matter where you are. You might also find it easier to bring up sensitive topics over chat or phone rather than face-to-face. In some cases, the doctor may recommend using phone or video, or ask for a photo. Using text, audio, images, and video enables you and the doctor to communicate naturally depending on the issue. When the doctor replies, you’ll receive an SMS notification, so you can do other things while waiting. Efficient for the doctor, and convenient for you.
Can I get a referral to a hospital and specialist examination after a home visit?
Yep. Home doctors will be able to replace a visit to the emergency room or family doctor, solving the vast majority of issues on the spot. If we cannot solve the problem there and then the Home Doctors will be able to hospitalize for further examination and treatment when this is required, or refer to specialist examination or imaging (MRI, CT, X-ray, ultrasound) when needed.
Can I request prescriptions, referrals, or requisitions through customer support?
Due to legal requirements for privacy and information security, patient information, prescription requests, referrals, requisitions, etc. must not be sent by email or other written customer support channels. Emails and support inquiries containing such requests will not be answered for this reason.

If you want treatment for an additional patient during the same home visit, it costs NOK 990 extra. You will be seen by a highly experienced and skilled doctor who sets aside plenty of time. Examinations, medical equipment, and medications provided are included in the price. The same applies to sick notes, prescriptions, and medical certificates if relevant.

Who can book a Hjemmelege?
Hjemmelegene is for everyone, both young and old. Anyone over 18 years old with a valid payment card can book a doctor from Hjemmelegene, and for patients under 18, a parent or guardian must make the booking. Many also choose to book a doctor for someone they care about – we are happy to help mothers, fathers, grandmothers, and grandfathers as well.
Can I book a doctor on behalf of my child or other relatives?
Yes. When booking, specify that the consultation is not for yourself, and who the patient is. Remember to provide the patient’s contact information and home address so the doctor can find the location.
Can I book an STD test with you?
Yes, we can help you with both testing and treatment of sexually transmitted infections (STIs). You will receive a test kit by mail and can take the test at home. Once the results have been reviewed by the doctor, we can prescribe the appropriate treatment if needed. We cannot start treatment without a positive test result.
Can the doctor assess multiple patients at the same visit?
When booking, you can choose whether you want an hour for 1 or 2 people in the same household. Then you will have a doctor come home to the address you provide, who will see two patients at the same visit. This entails a surcharge for patient No. 2 of 990kr.
How do I pay the doctor?
Payment is made when booking the appointment, and the amount is charged to your payment card. You therefore do not pay anything directly to the doctor. This way, both you and the doctor can focus entirely on the consultation.
Will I receive a receipt for the payment?
Yes. A receipt will be sent to the email address you provided. You can also log in to "My Page" to find receipts from your previous visits.
How do I use a discount code?
If you have received a discount code, add it after selecting your appointment. Enter the code without quotation marks and click "add," and the price will update. Please note that a payment card must be entered and verified as valid regardless of the discount amount. Only the final price will be charged.
Why can’t I see a picture of the doctor?
You will be able to see the doctor’s full name and picture after completing your booking. Rest assured that all our doctors are carefully selected, highly qualified, and very experienced. When recruiting, we look not only for strong medical expertise but also for excellent social skills, which are essential for providing a safe and positive home visit. We therefore ask you to choose the appointment time that suits you best. By letting each patient book the time that works for them, we ensure that the closest available doctor takes the visit. This way, we save both the environment and the doctor’s time.
How can I cancel an appointment?
You can cancel a home visit up to 24 hours before the consultation. If you choose to cancel after the 24-hour deadline, we will not be able to refund your payment. Digital consultations can be canceled free of charge up until the consultation starts.
Why do I have to pay full price with you?
Like other private medical services, we do not receive public reimbursement. To provide home visits, we employ well-equipped doctors who come directly to where you need them. The majority of the price you pay goes toward covering the doctor’s salary and the expenses related to the home visit.
I can’t find any available appointments at the times I want.
We sometimes experience high demand, so we encourage you to book the first available appointment you see. We are continuously working to bring in more doctors to expand our services. If you don’t see any appointments, it may be because we haven’t reached your area yet, or that we have only just launched our service there.
Can I use my exemption card with Hjemmelegene?
Unfortunately, we cannot accept exemption cards since private medical services do not receive reimbursement from the public healthcare system.
How is the coverage in different areas?
Hjemmelegene has a smart platform that uses advanced technology to connect patients with nearby doctors. Each doctor offers home visits in their local area and decides their own availability. Our coverage therefore depends on how many doctors we have in each area. We are available for home visits in Greater Oslo. If you need help in other areas, you can book a digital consultation.
Can I book a doctor to a different address than my home?
Yes, the address you provide when booking determines where the doctor will meet you. We recommend using your home address, but if you prefer to meet the doctor at your workplace, hotel, or another location, that is of course fine. Just make sure there is a suitable space with good lighting and quiet conditions for a proper consultation.
Can I book the same doctor again?
Yes, you can. After the first visit, you will receive an email with a message from the doctor who saw you. In this email, you’ll find a link that lets you view the available appointments from that same doctor. If you book one of these appointments, you’ll get the exact same doctor again. You can also book a new appointment with the same doctor by logging in to "My Page" on hjemmelegene.no.
Will a visit from Hjemmelegene be recorded in my patient journal with my GP?
In most cases, we aim to send a summary of the visit to your GP. Hjemmelegene values close collaboration with other healthcare providers involved in each patient’s care. It is important that your GP is included in issues that require long-term follow-up, and our doctors may ask you to follow up with your GP afterward.
You can refuse to let the visiting doctor share information with your GP. However, Hjemmelegene advises against this, as the GP plays a very important role in your long-term follow-up, which requires a full understanding of your health situation.
How do I get help with questions about sick notes, prescription issues, or receiving my medical record?
For questions about sick notes, sending your medical record to you or your GP, prescription problems, or inquiries about prescribed medications, you can contact us via support or phone. We will then help you get in touch with the doctor for the quickest possible clarification. Please note that it may take some time during weekends or holidays. You can also send a message to the doctor within 72 hours after a home visit via "My Page".
How much follow-up is included with a home visit?
We place great emphasis on following up with our patients. If the doctor visited you less than two days ago, you can contact the doctor directly via "My Page." In some cases, the doctor may not be able to assist you over the phone, and a new consultation will then be necessary. This is a decision the doctor must make.
Since illnesses and conditions change over time, it is medically necessary for the doctor to conduct a new visit/follow-up for requests that come more than two days after a visit. In such cases, you will need to book a new consultation. Remember that you can book a new home visit with the same doctor using the link sent by email or by logging in to "My Page" . Please contact our customer support if you have any questions about this.
Why isn’t the doctor answering my calls or text messages?
Unfortunately, the doctors and healthcare staff at Hjemmelegene cannot respond directly to patient inquiries via SMS or phone. Please use our website to contact us through support or phone. Remember that you can send a message to the doctor up to 72 hours after a home visit or book a new appointment with the same doctor via "My Page." If you have questions beyond this, please contact our support. We emphasize that in case of an acute threat to life or health, you must always call 113 and not wait for us.
Where do I collect my medications?
During a home visit, our doctors bring some of the most commonly used medications and can start treatment on the spot if relevant. If the doctor issues a prescription, you can use it at any Norwegian pharmacy. If you have been prescribed medication, most pharmacies also offer home delivery.
Where can I find the digital sick note I received from the doctor?
Go to NAV.no and click on the page “Ditt sykefravær” (“Your sick leave”). You can find more information on this page. NAV is always available to help if you have any questions, and we recommend calling them to confirm that they have received your sick note. If you still have trouble finding it, you are welcome to contact us via chat or phone. You can also notify the doctor through "My Page" if you cannot locate your sick note.
How do you handle my health information?
Hjemmelegene places great importance on your privacy. Due to legal requirements for privacy and information security, all sensitive information is stored encrypted in our database.
Patients are therefore asked not to share sensitive information when contacting Hjemmelegene’s customer support. Information you share with the doctor is bound by strict confidentiality and is only recorded in a separate electronic medical record system that meets all requirements for data security and privacy. With Hjemmelegene, you can feel completely confident that your privacy is always protected.
