Frequently asked questions
With If travel insurance, digital consultations with Hjemmelegene are included. You’ll be in direct contact with one of our skilled doctors. We can help you with:
- Examination and treatment
- Prescription and medical certificate
- Assessment of the need for an in-person consultation
When can we issue a prescription?
We only prescribe antibiotics in a few cases, and only when there is a clear medical indication. Sedatives or addictive medications cannot be prescribed through digital consultations. Our prescriptions can be used throughout the EU.
Referral to a local doctor abroad
We are unable to provide referrals for further examinations with a physical doctor or hospital while you’re traveling abroad. If needed, please contact If's travel assistance.
What can we help you with on your journey?
In a digital doctor's appointment, you will be in direct contact with one of our skilled doctors. The doctor may, among other things:
- Treat and follow up on medical issues and conditions where no physical examination is needed. It can apply to questions about medication and side effects, mild respiratory ailments, assessment of rashes and skin ailments, digestive problems, and more.
- Consider whether or not a physical doctor's appointment is needed where you are located. If you know you need to see a physical doctor, contact Ifs Travel Help.
- If you are travelling in Norway, your doctor may refer you to a specialist in some cases. Often a physical doctor's appointment will be necessary.
- Give you medical advice and recommendations based on your state of health.
- Printing prescriptions in the European Union, according to the legislation. Please note that some pharmacies may reject digital prescriptions despite a valid prescription under the EU Directive.
- Print a medical certificate in case of acute illness and after individual assessment.
What can't we help you with on your journey?
Unfortunately, that's not all the doctor is allowed to do in a digital doctor's appointment. We can't help you with:
- Prescriptions for medicines covered by the Narcotics Regulations, i.e. A/B preparations (including strong painkillers or sedatives such as Paralgin Forte, Imovane and Cosylan).
- Antibiotics. We can prescribe antibiotics only in case of UTI and eye catarrh.
- Referral further to examinations with a physical doctor or hospital while traveling abroad. Contact Ifs Travel Help.
- Sick notices. Where there is a basis, the doctor may provide a medical certificate confirming illness.
In case of acute danger to life and health, call the local emergency number, 112 for most European countries.
Do I need to install an app to book a digital consultation?
We've purposely avoided making an app, so you don't have to. Everything is done from your browser. The advantage is that you can use the services from both PC and mobile. You can still create an app button on your iPhone that will take you to this website.
- Tap the share icon at the bottom (square with arrow)
- Select “Add to Home Screen”
- Voila! Now you have the “app” with which links to this website.
I can't get video to work, what should I do?
- To start a video consultation with the Home Doctors, we need access to the camera and microphone of your device. Select “Allow” when asked about camera and microphone access when entering the video room. You can also provide access under settings on your phone or PC. Settings look a little different depending on whether you're on phone or pc and what browser you're using. Below you will find links to help pages for your browser.
- If you need help, you can also start a chat with our customer support by tapping the speech bubble in the bottom right corner.
- It may also be that your browser is not supported. Try upgrading your browser or changing device and try again.
- A good old trick is also to try to restart your phone or pc if the problem persists.

Can I bring up multiple issues?
In a digital consultation, we ask that you limit yourself to one issue. If you bring up several, the doctor may need to select one to focus on during the consultation. If you have multiple issues that are complex or time-consuming, we recommend seeing a doctor in person, for example by booking a home visit.
Hvordan får jeg tak i henvisningen/legeerklæringen min?
You can find your referrals/medical certificates under "My Documents" on My Page. You can also go directly to "My Documents" by logging in with BankID on on this page.
My child is sick – can you help?
We can guide you on how to handle acute illness in your child. However, we have a low threshold for recommending a physical examination by a doctor, since a child’s condition can worsen quickly and it may be difficult to assess their overall health in a digital consultation.
Can rashes and skin problems be assessed digitally?
Rashes and other skin problems can often be clearly shown in photos, making them well-suited for chat consultations.
We can help assess most skin conditions and provide a referral to a dermatologist if relevant. This is always up to the individual doctor and cannot be guaranteed. If there is suspicion of infection, we will usually recommend a physical examination.
An exception is tick bites, where we can prescribe antibiotics if you have the classic symptoms of erythema migrans.
Can you treat a cold?
We can guide you in case of respiratory ailments (cough, sore throat, stuffy nose, sinus problems, etc.), including recommending or prescribing symptom-relieving preparations. We cannot assess whether you need antibiotics, or prescribe strong cough suppressants (Cosylan or Solvipect comp).
Can you treat a urinary tract infection?
We can help you, if you have a urinary tract infection. Our doctors make an assessment of situation, and can prescribe antibiotics where appropriate. However, it is important to note that the doctor sometimes needs you to see a doctor physically, with a urine test. Then we will not be able to write out antibiotics.
